Supporting Educational and Career Journeys
When Ebony graduated from high school, her next step was cosmetology school. It wasn’t until her best friend, the owner of a child care program, asked her to assist at the facility that she realized caring for and educating young children was not only a passion but also a calling.
“Education is important, and child care providers are a child’s first teacher outside of the home. We are the ones who prepare them for elementary, and that starts with lifelong learning,” Ebony shared. “If we nurture them and pour into them, they will thrive in this world.”
After she started assisting in the classroom, the opportunity to further her education presented itself through WECA’s 53206 initiative, which launched in early 2020 to provide some additional support to those who live and work in Milwaukee’s 53206 zip code. The goal of 53206 is to improve child care by supporting the early childhood workforce through enhanced T.E.A.C.H. scholarships and REWARD stipends in addition to coaching support.
For Ebony, this has led to receiving an infant and toddler credential, administrative credential, and, soon, an associate’s degree and technical diploma.
“The 53206 Initiative has opened up a new world to me – an educational journey that has taken me many places,” she said. “WECA and T.E.A.C.H. have walked with me through this journey and have helped me accomplish things that I didn’t know I could accomplish. I’m able to show my kids, no matter what age, you can go back to school – you can accomplish a lot of things.”
The experience also has allowed Ebony to assist her peers, meet new people, and form great bonds, including with her T.E.A.C.H. counselor at WECA, Gina. Ebony’s journey also has included making the honor society and being asked to provide a presentation on her experience with 53206 at Milwaukee Area Technical College.
“Without 53206, I don’t think I would have been as good of a teacher as I am, or as knowledgeable of this field,” she said. “This industry needs more dedicated and caring teachers.”
Apoyo a los trayectos educativos y profesionales
Cuando Ebony terminó el bachillerato, su siguiente paso fue ir a la escuela de cosmetología. No fue hasta que su mejor amiga, propietaria de un programa de cuidado infantil, le pidió que la ayudara en el programa que se dio cuenta de que cuidar y educar a los/as niños/as pequeños/as no era sólo una pasión, sino también una vocación.
“La educación es importante, y los puericultores son los primeros maestros de los/as niños/as fuera de casa. Somos quienes les preparamos para la escuela primaria, y eso empieza con el aprendizaje constante”, dice Ebony. “Si les cuidamos y nos dedicamos a ellos, prosperarán en este mundo”.
Después de comenzar a ayudar en el aula, se le presentó la oportunidad de continuar su educación a través de la iniciativa 53206 de WECA, que se lanzó a principios de 2020 para brindar algo de apoyo adicional a quienes viven y trabajan en el código postal 53206 de Milwaukee. El objetivo de 53206 es mejorar el cuidado infantil mediante el apoyo a la fuerza laboral de la primera infancia a través de becas mejoradas T.E.A.C.H. y estipendios REWARD, además de apoyo de coaching.
Para Ebony, esto ha permitido que reciba una credencial para bebés y párvulos, una credencial administrativa y, pronto, un título de asociado y un diploma técnico.
“La Iniciativa 53206 me ha abierto un mundo nuevo, un viaje educativo que me ha llevado a muchos lugares”, dijo. “WECA y T.E.A.C.H. han caminado conmigo a través de este viaje y me han ayudado a lograr cosas que no sabía que podía lograr. Soy capaz de mostrarle a mis hijos, que no importa la edad, se puede volver a la escuela – se pueden lograr un montón de cosas “.
La experiencia también le ha permitido a Ebony ayudar a sus colegas, conocer gente nueva y formar grandes lazos, incluso con su consejera de T.E.A.C.H. en WECA, Gina. El viaje de Ebony también ha incluido entrar en la sociedad de honor y que se le pida hacer una presentación sobre su experiencia con 53206 en Milwaukee Area Technical College.
“Sin 53206, no creo que hubiera sido tan buena profesora como soy, ni que conociera tanto este campo”, afirma. “Este sector necesita más docentes dedicados y atentos”.
